What to Prepare Before You Apply

A simple checklist to help you feel organized and confident before starting a mortgage application.

A little preparation goes a long way. Having your information ready helps your loan officer give you clearer guidance and a smoother experience.

A starting checklist

You don't need everything perfect to begin a conversation, but these are commonly useful:

  • A general sense of your income and how you're paid
  • An idea of your monthly obligations (recurring debts and expenses)
  • Awareness of your savings available for a home purchase
  • Your goals — the area you're looking in, and your timeline

Why it helps

When you and your loan officer have a clear picture, it's easier to compare options that actually fit your situation. As a brokerage, we can then shop programs across our network with your goals in mind.

What happens next

After an initial conversation, your loan officer will explain the next steps and what documentation may be needed. There's no pressure — the first step is just a conversation.
